ARES is the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, a voluntary organization of licensed radio amateurs who have registered their capabilities and equipment for providing emergency communications as a public service to the community.

ARES was started in 1935

.

ARES in each locality operates under the direction of the Emergency Coordinator (EC), whose function is to direct the activities of the ARES members to maintain a state of readiness.

RACES

RADIO AMATEUR CIVIL EMERGENCY SERVICE

RACES operates under the FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA). Call-ups could include fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. The FCC has authorized that RACES be requested by state or federal officials, and is strictly limited to official Civil Preparedness activitiy.

When joining the Onondaga County Radio Emergency Service you become a member of both ARES and RACES combined.

SKYWARN

SKYWARN provides volunteer weather reporting to the Binghamton NWS Office. Licensed volunteers are always welcome to assist in spotting weather. The Binghamton District Office serves 26 counties, which includes Onondaga County.

SKYWARN TRAINING HELD ONCE A YEAR,



Weather nets are opened when Onondaga County has been called out by the Binghamton Weather office, unless something has been spotted that the Binghamton office is unaware of. Then a request should be made to the Binghamton office before an official net is opened.

When toned out for a "WATCH" - be ON GUARD
a "WARNING" tone can be for 24 hour advance notice of a weather problem. This is repeated every 1/2 hour. Binghamton will be contacted to keep in touch of when they want us to open a net for reports

Sign-up for training through the Onondaga County Emergency Coordinator, or an Assistant E.C.

All ARES/RACES operations, including SKYWARN, are conducted on 147.90/30 the Onondaga County repeater, which has a 90 second timer.

Binghamton NWS has requested Hams monitor for Floods.

The ONONDAGA COUNTY RADIO EMERGENCY NET
is held the first and third Mondays of each month
(except July 4th and Labor Day weekends)
7:30 p.m. on 147.90/30.
All card carrying ARES/RACES members should be checking in.
